PENN STATE LADY LIONS

As Basketball Analytics Consultant for Penn State Women's Basketball, I worked alongside the coaching staff and analytics team on the tools and reports that supported game prep, player evaluation, and in-season decisions. The work focused on turning the program's data and film into something coaches could move quickly through. Below are two of the projects that came out of that work.

Penn State was rebuilding, coming off a 7-23 season (1-17 in Big Ten play) the prior year. The 2020-21 season saw real growth, with the program improving to 9-15 and 6-13 in conference play.

This was where the bridge between analytics and film first started taking shape as my specialty. Most of the projects lived in SportsCode, with a focus on turning player data and film into tools coaches and players could use directly.

tools that work

CUSTOMIZED CODE WINDOWS

A custom tool built in SportsCode to help streamline film breakdowns. This code window paired hot-keyed labels with the program's specific tagging elements, letting the coaching staff clip plays and organize their data in one place. The structure covered everything from possessions and shot quality to defensive coverages and screen actions. The workflow was faster, the data stayed accessible, and building edits got easier. The information collected here didn't just support film breakdown and scouting — it became the foundation for other reports.

An output window built for the coaching staff to track each player's contribution throughout the season. The tool layered raw production with a custom rating system tied to Penn State's specific goals, giving the staff a fuller picture of individual impact. A toggle between a few views let coaches see traditional box score stats and what the program valued beyond them.
